The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM, formerly CAIR-CAN), the leading advocacy group for Canadian Muslims, has been spearheading a campaign to pressure the Conservative Party to disqualify candidates because of their alleged Islamophobic posts on social media.
On September 13, 2019 NCCM issued a statement welcoming “the resignation of Cameron Ogilvie, Conservative Party of Canada – Parti conservateur du Canada candidate for Winnipeg North, after revelations of Islamophobic and anti-immigrant social media posts on his account.”
Mustafa Farooq, the Executive Director of NCCM, thanked the Conservative Party of Canada for taking swift action and said: “What Ogilvie is proposing is not only Islamophobic, it is illegal and harkens back to the days when the Komagata Maru was turned away from Canadian shores. Proposing illegal conduct and pandering to fear is unbecoming of any Canadian politician, let alone someone who wants to represent the beautifully diverse city of Winnipeg.”
NCCM also continues to call for the resignation of Ghada Melek, a a Coptic Christian Conservative candidate in Mississauga, Ontario unless she “clearly denounces anti-Muslim bigotry and Islamophobia and commits to meeting folks from diverse backgrounds to learn more.”
“Without a real apology, despite giving Ghada Melek numerous opportunities to engage in such a process, we have no choice but to continue to call on Andrew Scheer, alongside other folks in the Muslim Council of Peel and Imam Ibrahim Hindy, to drop Ghada as a candidate, NCCM stated on September 15, 2019.
Moreover, Mustafa Farooq commended Imam Ibrahim Hindy for his firm stance on revoking Ghada Melek’s candidacy. Farroq wrote: “Ibrahim Hindy is an amazing Canadian and as far as I’m concerned a national treasure.”
In the past two years the American Center of Democracy uncovered troubling information about Imam Ibrahim Hindy.
Ibrahim Hindy’s support of the “Mujahideen”
Imam Ibrahim Hindy used to end his Friday sermons with a prayer in support of the “mujahideen”: “O Allah, raise the standing of Islam and the Muslims. Raise with your grace the word of truth and religion [of Islam]. O Allah, give victory (help) to the mujahideen in Your path everywhere. O Allah, unify their rows and consolidate their word and give them victory (help) over Your enemy and their enemies. O Allah, break the shackles of our prisoners and Muslim prisoners and return them safe and sound to their families.”
Ibrahim Hindy’s link to Qatari charity accused of supporting terrorism
In 2011, Qatar’s Eid Charity donated 385,000 QAR (about $140,000) for purchasing Mississauga-based Dar Al-Tawheed Islamic Centre and Safa and Marwa Islamic School run by Imam Ibrahim Hindy. Five years later, in January 2016 Ibrahim Hindy travelled to Qatar on a fundraising mission.
In Canada, EID Charity has been known for its involvement in teaching and training imams and preachers. A Canada Revenue Agency audit (Oct. 1, 2010 to Sept. 30, 2013 ) of the Islamic Society of British Columbia alleged the charity was “controlled or influenced” by the Qatari EID Foundation that is accused of supporting terrorism. The Islamic Society operates the Masjid Al-Hidayah and Islamic Cultural Centre in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia. “The organization’s connection to and possible control by the Eid Foundation is particularly concerning given that publicly available information… indicates that the Eid Foundation is alleged to have provided support to terrorism,” the CRA Charities Directorate wrote, according to Global News report. “Our research indicates that the Eid Foundation is a member organization in the Union of Good, a global coalition of Islamic charities operated by Hamas, a listed terrorist entity in Canada.” In 2008 Israel designated EID Charity as a terrorist entity.
Ibrahim Hindy hosted Imams who voiced statements about killing Jews
In December 2016 Imam Ibrahim Hindy hosted Sheikh Nash’at Ahmad, an Egyptian Salafist preacher, who justified the 9/11 attacks and was arrested in Egypt for his support of mujahedeen involved in the global jihad. According to Al Jazeera Center for Studies, Sheikh Nash’at Ahmad is famous for his fiery sermons against the enemies of Islam and his support for re-establishing the Islamic Caliphate. On January 2, 2016, he recited the following supplication (originally in Arabic) “[O Allah] give victory to our brother in Greater Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Libya, Burma, Mali, Yemen and other Muslim countries… O Allah, take revenge of the enemies of Your religion. O Allah, destroy the Jews and all others who support them in countries around the world… O Allah, destroy the Russians, Hindus, Shiites Communists, destroy all those who attacked the Muslims. O Lord, count their number; slay them one by one and spare not one of them. O Allah, purify the Muslims lands from their filth and squalor, O Allah liberate the imprisoned Al-Aqsa [mosque].” Imam Ibrahim Hindy called Shaykh Nash’at Ahmad the “renowned scholar from Egypt,” but later argued that he was not familiar with the content of Ahmad’s sermons and statements.
Imam Ibrahim Hindy also hosted in his Mississauga mosque Imam Karim AbuZaid, the Imam of the Colorado Muslims Community Center (Dar Al-Tawheed) in Aurora, Colorado. In his sermons in the US Karim AbuZaid cited Mohammad’s prophecy about the future killing of the Jews by the Muslims. In Toronto he taught a book by Sheikh Muhammad bin Jamil Zino that calls the Jews in Palestine the “enemies of Islam” and rules that the jihad against them is a duty upon the Muslims.
Ibrahim Hindy justifies striking (lightly) the wife under certain circumstances
In an an interview with a representative of the Renew Church (published on YouTube on March 20, 2016) Ibrahim Hindy explained the Quranic verse on wife beating: “And if that doesn’t work [talking to wife, stop sleeping with her], then you tap the person [wife], this is a type of non-verbal communication, this striking with a pen, with a twig, to say: this has reached its limit, I don’t have any other avenue after this other than divorce. And if that still doesn’t work you get a divorce.”
Update (September 16, 2019)
Imam Ibrahim Hindy denies ties to Qatari Eid Foundation
On September 16, 2019 Imam Ibrahim Hindy tweeted:
Thread: On Tarek Fatah (@TarekFatah), the fake imam (aka @imamofpeace) and fake news: (1/8)
Tarek Fatah just retweeted an allegation posted by the fake imam which accuses me of having “ties to Qatar”. The basis of the allegation is that I visited Qatar in 2016 “on a fundraising mission” and alleges that the Mosque I worked for received a donation in 385,000 QAR. (2/8)
Fact: I only visited Qatar once, and it was in 2013. At the time, I was unemployed and did not participate in any fundraising. For good measure, I’ve checked with the Mosque if they’ve ever taken donations from Qatar the past decade and the answer is no. (3/8)
I myself have reviewed all documents from 2011 (as per the allegation) and it checks out. (4/8)
Also, Islamophobes are dumb exhibit #4252352: They allege that 385,000QAR is “about 1.4 million”. They can’t even work out a simple conversion rate. 385,000QAR is roughly $140,000. Geniuses I tell ya. (4/8)
All of this of course is a stupid attempt to attack me because I’ve pointed out the obvious:
@ghada_melek has engaged in bigotry, Islamophobia and homophobia and has made little to no attempt to rectify her mistakes. And therefore does not deserve to run as an MP. (5/8)
Ibrahim Hindy
Instead @TarekFatah, who has no substance to argue, has to go for character assassination. He calls me a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, even though (6/8)
Fatah knows very well that I am not. But it’s a brazen attempt at intimidation because he knows that even the allegation can carry life-threatening implications in many countries. (7/8)
Finally, @TheTorontoSun needs to examine their journalistic duty towards integrity in enabling those who are clearly spreading misinformation. If @TarekFatah is part of a new org, then he should be held to journalistic standards otherwise they need to distance themselves from him
