Mustafa Farooq is the Executive Director of the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM). A lawyer by profession, Mustafa completed his Juris Doctor at the University of Alberta and Osgoode Hall (York University) and later earned his Master of Laws (LLM) at UC Berkeley in California.

As-salaamu alaikum| Peace Be Upon You Friends,
It’s hard to believe that a year ago, I was blessed to be in Madinah as we prepared for Hajj.
When I think of Madinah, and of Hajj, only one word comes to mind: Mercy.
The Hajj is a journey where we seek God’s mercy, and God’s forgiveness, as we yearn to draw closer to Him.
It’s the same mission of mercy that al-Ḥājj Mālik ash-Shabāzz, our Brother Malcolm X, went on in 1964 (pictured here in his Hajj tour). His brilliant notation captured the essence of Hajj when he wrote, “Never have I been so highly honored. Never have I been made to feel more humble and unworthy.”
Even though no one from North America can go for Hajj this year because of COVID-19, I believe that there is a unique opportunity for us all to continue to seek that Divine Mercy during these 10 days of Dhul Hijja.
We all know that the path of folks trod by people like Brother Malcolm, with his unapologetic and fearless gaze towards justice, remains open for us.
The reality is that we can all venture towards such mercy, and to stand for justice, wherever we are.
In these days of Dhul Hijja, think about what you will be doing to spread mercy in your workplace, amongst your neighbours, and in supporting those who need help the most.
At NCCM, we have, to the best of our abilities, been defending the rights of those who need help.
– We are fighting against Bill 21 in Quebec, while litigating against Rebel Media in the west. The time for second-class citizenship is over.
– We are standing for police accountability, on the streets, and in boardrooms.
– We are fighting against online hate that targets many of us, including our youth, through legislative reform.
– We are in our legislatures, advocating for reform – from the CBSA Oversight Bill, to whistle-blower legislation for national security agencies, to making sure that all Canadian Muslims are kept safe from the growth of the alt-right.Help us continue this fight.
